Laurus nobilis is a much-loved shrub in NZ gardens. It is most commonly grown as a specimen, used as a hedge (both trimmed and untrimmed), added to a mixed planting, or planted as a backdrop for smaller plants. It is an excellent complement to a modern or cottage garden, bringing both formality and elegance to a space. Bay trees are also popular plants for growing in pots, and their evergreen nature and somewhat slower growth habit make them ideal for pool gardens. Little wonder Laurus nobilis is so popular in NZ gardens!

What is Laurus nobilis std?

Laurus nobilis std refers to the traditional Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis) grown and shaped into a standard form, typically featuring a tall, straight stem with a dense, rounded head of evergreen foliage. This trained growth habit provides instant formality and height, making laurus nobilis std perfect for framing doorways, lining pathways, or as a focal point in container displays. The aromatic, glossy leaves are widely used in cooking, adding depth of flavour to soups, stews, and classic Mediterranean dishes.

Growing and Caring for Laurus nobilis std

Laurus nobilis std thrives in most parts of New Zealand, favouring positions with plenty of sun or partial shade. It is highly adaptable, tolerating windy spots, coastal gardens, and both sheltered and exposed locations. To ensure strong growth and healthy foliage, plant laurus nobilis std in well-drained soil and water regularly until established. Once rooted, bay trees are drought tolerant and benefit from occasional feeding with a balanced fertiliser. Prune lightly to maintain the ball-shaped crown, and remove any suckers from the base of the trunk.

Winter care is straightforward thanks to laurus nobilis std’s hardiness; in colder regions, position containers in sheltered spots to protect roots from frost. When grown in pots, choose a quality potting mix and re-pot every few years to encourage vigorous growth.
