What is a Late Flowering Camellia?

A late flowering camellia typically starts blooming from late autumn into early winter, sometimes peaking as late as August in more sheltered New Zealand gardens. These camellias are prized for their ability to flower when many other plants have faded, keeping your garden vibrant and captivating. They’re perfect for adding a touch of elegance to outdoor spaces, especially when their glossy evergreen leaves frame the blooms beautifully against the winter backdrop.

Best Late Flowering Camellia Varieties for New Zealand Gardens

There are several outstanding late flowering camellia varieties to consider if you want a garden that doesn’t stop delighting. Some reliable favourites include:

Camellia Setsugekka: Renowned for its snowy white, semi-double blooms with a cluster of golden stamens, this variety starts flowering in late autumn and continues into winter. Its gentle fragrance and upright habit make it a sought-after choice for hedges or specimen plantings.
Camellia Midnight: If you crave rich, deep tones, this late flowering camellia offers dramatic, velvety-red to almost black blooms. It’s truly eye-catching in winter and provides a striking contrast to neighbouring evergreens.
Camellia Mark Alan: Another late season performer, this vibrant red, formal double camellia adds a classic touch to shaded garden spots.
Camellia Nicky Crisp: Admired for its soft pink blooms and compact habit, this variety flowers reliably through autumn and well into winter, making it an excellent option for smaller gardens or containers.
Camellia 'Apple Blossom': With delicate pink and white petals, this late flowering camellia creates a gentle, cottage-garden aesthetic when much of the colourful summer display has vanished.

Tips for Growing Late Flowering Camellia

To get the best from your late flowering camellia, plant in a spot with dappled shade and well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Protect from harsh morning sun and cold winds, which can damage emerging buds. Mulching with pine bark or compost helps keep the root zone cool and moist, while regular feeding with a camellia-specific fertiliser ensures healthy growth and abundant blooms. Prune after flowering to shape and encourage new wood for next year’s flowers.

Enhance Your Winter Garden

Introducing a late flowering camellia to your garden transforms a dreary winter landscape into a spectacle of colour and texture. Explore favourites like Camellia Setsugekka, Camellia Midnight, or Camellia 'Apple Blossom' to enjoy blooms when you need them most. With careful selection and a little care, you’ll have a garden that shines from autumn all the way through to spring.
