Why Choose a Large Viburnum?

A large viburnum offers so much more than just size. These hardy, versatile shrubs provide clouds of fragrant white blooms in late winter through spring, followed by autumn berries that attract birds. Many varieties display brilliant autumn colour or evergreen foliage for year-round interest. Their dense, spreading habit creates a handsome backdrop for smaller plants, and most large viburnum types are tolerant of New Zealand’s variable climate.

If you’re after a classic hedge, the structured branching and layered flower heads of Viburnum plicatum Mariesii (Doublefile Viburnum) and Viburnum Newport (Doublefile Viburnum) are ideal. Both form broad, elegant shrubs with horizontal tiers of creamy-white flower clusters and make excellent large-scale specimens.

Popular Large Viburnum Varieties for NZ Gardens

Several varieties of large viburnum flourish in New Zealand gardens. For impact in spring, Viburnum opulus Notcutt’s Variety (Snowball Bush) is a garden classic, reaching up to 4 metres with its round balls of white flowers. Its stately shape and vibrant autumn leaves add a seasonal highlight to any border or as a stand-alone feature.

For a unique, semi-evergreen look, Viburnum Eskimo delivers domed heads of snowy white flowers on a rounded, upright shrub. Its compact form can still reach substantial size, perfect for gardens wanting a statement plant that remains manageable.

Many gardeners also appreciate the reliability of Viburnum tinus. While this variety can be pruned to fit smaller spaces, left alone it will grow into a robust, large viburnum shrub, producing clusters of pink-tinged white flowers in winter and dark blue-black berries into spring.

Planting, Care, and Uses for Large Viburnum

Large viburnum shrubs thrive best in well-drained soil with consistent moisture and full sun to partial shade. Shelter from harsh winds ensures the best flower displays, but once established, most varieties tolerate moderate drought. Mulch and feed in spring for maximum health. Large viburnums work well in a variety of settings: as tall hedges, informal screens, wildlife gardens, or dramatic anchors in mixed shrub borders.

When planning your garden, consider combining a large viburnum with companion plants that highlight their seasonal changes or provide underplanting interest. With so many sizes and flower styles available, there’s a large viburnum to suit virtually every planting scheme.

Explore our range today, from showstopping Viburnum opulus Notcutt’s Variety (Snowball Bush) to the elegant Viburnum plicatum Mariesii (Doublefile Viburnum) and low-maintenance Viburnum tinus. Let a large viburnum transform your outdoor space with reliable beauty and structure for years to come.
