Why Choose a Large Umbrella Tree (Schefflera actinophylla)?

If you’re looking for an easy-care, fast-growing addition to your plant collection, the Large Umbrella Tree is an excellent option. Outdoors in frost-free zones, it can grow into an impressive small tree, reaching up to six metres, while indoors it happily adapts to containers and remains a manageable size with pruning. Its upright, spreading form adds architectural interest, and the wide, hand-shaped leaves instantly create a lush, tropical vibe.

In the right setting, mature Large Umbrella Trees can surprise you with dramatic bursts of red, tentacle-like flowers, adding another layer of texture and colour. Their robust root system and quick growth make them ideal for screening or as a bold background in gardens.

How to Grow and Care for Your Large Umbrella Tree

Schefflera actinophylla is famed for being forgiving and low-maintenance. Position your Large Umbrella Tree in a spot with filtered sunlight for best results—think bright indoor spaces or dappled shade outdoors. Well-drained soil is a must, and a regular watering routine will keep it looking its best, though established plants handle dry spells well. Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in spring and summer for extra lushness, and trim occasionally to shape or contain its size. Keep in mind, indoors, the Large Umbrella Tree helps purify the air, making it a health-boosting feature for your home or office.

Complementary and Related Plants

For a more compact version, the Schefflera arboricola (Dwarf Umbrella Tree) is perfect for desks or small apartments. If you’re keen to see a New Zealand native twist, check out Schefflera digitata (Seven Finger) with its distinctive slender leaflets.

For contrasting textures and year-round interest in your garden, team your Large Umbrella Tree with compact shrubs like Hebe salicifolia (Koromiko), Hebe parviflora, the fiery-blooming Azalea Fiery Boy, romantic Hydrangea White Wave, or the tidy Podocarpus spinulosus (Dwarf Plum Pine).
