Why Choose a Large Lemon Tree?

Purchasing a large lemon tree for sale NZ offers immediate rewards. Unlike smaller saplings, mature lemon trees are ready to fruit and add structure to your garden right away. They quickly establish themselves and are more resilient to seasonal changes and pests. Large lemon trees also bring a classic Mediterranean feel to New Zealand gardens, thanks to their glossy green leaves, abundant blossoms, and golden fruit.

Best Lemon Varieties for NZ Gardens

If you’re considering which lemon tree to plant, some varieties excel in New Zealand’s climate and offer exceptional taste and productivity. The vigorous Lemon 'Ponderosa' is a popular choice, producing extra-large lemons with juicy, tangy flesh. Another NZ favourite is Lemon 'Yen Ben', renowned for its heavy crops and sharp flavour that’s ideal for cooking and preserves. For those wanting more versatility, the Lemon Meyer and Yen Ben (Double Grafted Lemon) combines two robust varieties on a single tree—perfect for gardeners who love both sweet and tart lemons.

Planting and Caring for Large Lemon Trees

Establishing a large lemon tree is easier than you might think. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with free-draining soil. Citrus trees appreciate regular watering, especially during dry spells, and benefit from annual feeding with a specialised citrus fertilizer. Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Protect your tree from frost and strong winds to ensure optimal growth and lemon production.

Companion planting can further enhance your citrus grove. Consider the handsome Pittosporum eugenioides (Tarata) as a windbreak or backdrop. It pairs well with lemons, offering native beauty and attracting beneficial insects. For added colour and pollinator interest near your lemon trees, the vibrant Kniphofia 'Lemon Fizz' is a stunning perennial with bold yellow blooms.
