Why Choose a Large Hydrangea?

Large hydrangeas are known for their generous size, with some varieties reaching up to 3 metres tall and just as wide. They fill garden spaces with billowing blooms from summer through autumn, offering vivid displays of mophead, lacecap, or panicle flowers. These magnificent shrubs not only offer stunning colour but also require minimal maintenance once established. A large hydrangea can also thrive in dappled shade or partial sun, making them adaptable to many New Zealand garden settings.

Top Large Hydrangea Varieties

Choosing the right variety is key to achieving the impact you desire. Among the outstanding options is Hydrangea paniculata Grandiflora, renowned for its grand, conical white flower heads that mature to blush pink and reach up to 30cm long. Another striking choice is Hydrangea paniculata Levana, which produces some of the largest hydrangea blooms available, with pure white panicles that can be over 40cm in length.

For gardeners seeking vivid, moody tones, Hydrangea 'Alpengluhen' is a top pick, delivering rich crimson or burgundy flowers on a robust, upright plant. For something unique, Hydrangea 'Harlequin' features distinctive bi-coloured blooms framed by bold green foliage.

If you prefer textural interest along with flower power, Hydrangea aspera (Rough Leaf Hydrangea) offers large clusters of lilac and blue flowers atop soft, felted leaves, bringing a different dimension to shaded areas of your garden.

Planting and Caring for Large Hydrangeas

To ensure your large hydrangea thrives, choose a location with moist, well-drained soil and protection from harsh midday sun. Dig in plenty of compost beforehand, and water deeply during dry spells, especially in the first couple of years. Large hydrangeas benefit from an annual trim in late winter or early spring, removing older stems to encourage strong new growth and abundant flowering. A layer of mulch around the base will help conserve moisture and keep roots cool.

Design Ideas with Large Hydrangeas

Large hydrangeas bring both form and colour to expansive borders, woodland settings, or as statement specimens along driveways. They pair beautifully with shade-lovers like hostas and ferns, or under deciduous trees where summer sunlight can filter through. For a long-lasting display, combine several varieties such as Hydrangea 'Alpengluhen' and Hydrangea paniculata Grandiflora to enjoy a succession of hues from early summer right through autumn.
