Why Choose a Large Bird of Paradise Plant?

A large bird of paradise plant, also known as Strelitzia, is beloved for its glossy, banana-like leaves and exotic flowers reminiscent of tropical birds. This plant thrives in New Zealand conditions, delivering lush evergreen foliage all year round and spectacular blooms in orange, blue, or white. Adding a large bird of paradise plant instantly brings a resort-like atmosphere to homes and commercial spaces alike.

Whether you are creating a focal point in your garden border, framing an entryway, or searching for a statement indoor plant, our selection of large bird of paradise plants will impress. They’re not just attractive; they’re also hardy, drought-tolerant, and low maintenance—perfect for both seasoned gardeners and beginners.

Our Range of Bird of Paradise Varieties

At our nursery, we specialise in offering a diverse range of Strelitzia reginae (Strelitzia), the classic bird of paradise, celebrated for its vivid orange and blue flowers. For those seeking an even larger and more dramatic variety, Strelitzia nicolai (Natal Wild Banana) is an excellent choice, with towering height and stunning white-and-blue blooms. If you’re after something truly unique, consider Strelitzia Mandelas Gold (Yellow Crane Flower), a spectacular yellow-flowering form.

For an elegant twist, try Strelitzia alba (White Bird Of Paradise ), which boasts lush foliage and pristine white flowers, or explore Strelitzia parvifolia (Spoonleaf Bird of Paradise), a compact variety perfect for pots and smaller spaces.

How to Care for Your Large Bird of Paradise Plant

Bird of paradise plants are surprisingly adaptable in New Zealand’s climate. Place your plant in a sunny or partly shaded spot, ensuring it is protected from strong winds—especially if outdoors. Well-drained soil and regular watering during the growing season encourage lush foliage and prolific flowering. Gardeners love that these plants withstand dry periods once established, making them ideal for low-maintenance landscaping or as hardy houseplants.

Feeding with a slow-release, all-purpose fertiliser in spring and summer will keep your large bird of paradise looking its best. Indoors, provide bright, indirect light to encourage steady growth and preserve the bold form these plants are prized for.
