Lapin Cherry

The Lapin Cherry is prized by New Zealand gardeners for its large, glossy fruit, robust growth, and reliable cropping. This modern sweet cherry cultivar offers flavour and performance, making it a top choice for backyards and orchards alike. Whether you’re an experienced grower or looking for your first cherry tree, discovering the benefits of Lapin cherry is an excellent way to enjoy sweet, juicy harvests fresh from your own garden.

Cherry Lapins

The 'Lapins' Cherry produces consistent yields of large, dark red fruit in summer. The flesh is red, sweet, and juicy. It does not require another variety planted alongside to produce fruit. This deciduous tree grows upright to about 5 m tall and 3 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. Cherries require a cold winter to set fruit, hence they are less suited to regions where winters tend to be mild. 'Lapins' is commonly used for fruit production and makes an attractive tree in its own right.

What Makes Lapin Cherry Special?

Lapin cherry trees are renowned for their exceptional fruit. The glossy, deep red cherries are large and packed with sweet, juicy flavour. The flesh is firm, making them ideal for eating fresh, in desserts, or preserving. What sets Lapin cherry apart is its versatility and reliability. A self-fertile variety, Lapin cherry does not need a pollinator to bear fruit, simplifying orchard planning for home gardeners.

Growing Lapin Cherry in New Zealand

New Zealand’s mild climate is perfect for cherry cultivation, and Lapin cherry thrives particularly well in most regions. Plant your tree in a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil. As a vigorous grower, Lapin cherry trees can quickly reach an impressive size and begin producing fruit in just a few seasons. Their later flowering period helps protect against spring frosts, making the Lapin cherry an excellent option for cooler areas.

Regular pruning is recommended to maintain shape and encourage a healthy crop. Keep your young Lapin cherry well-watered, especially during the flowering and fruiting season, and mulch to suppress weeds and retain moisture.

Companion Cherry Varieties

While Lapin cherry is self-fertile, planting different varieties can stagger your cherry season and increase your garden’s diversity. For those interested in exploring more cherry selections, consider these options:
