Pseudopanax ferox (Toothed Lancewood)

Toothed Lancewood

Pseudopanax ferox, commonly known as Fierce or Toothed Lancewood, is a NZ native tree that features interesting juvenile and mature forms. The juvenile leaves are long and slender with strongly toothed margins, while the adult form is much bushier and has a braided appearance. It grows slowly to eventually reach 8 m in height and 3 m in width. Pseudopanax ferox is commonly used as an architectural feature, added to a mixed planting, or grown around the pool or patio areas, where it is contained with trimming.

What Makes Lancewood Ferox Unique?

Unlike many New Zealand natives, lancewood ferox undergoes a dramatic transformation as it matures. The fierce, spiky juvenile leaves—adapted as a defense against browsing animals—gradually become broader, softer, and greener as the tree evolves into its adult form. In time, lancewood ferox develops into a small tree with a rounded canopy and attractive, deeply serrated leaves. The plant’s unusual silhouette and striking colours are particularly eye-catching in modern and native gardens alike.

Care and Growing Tips for Lancewood Ferox

Lancewood ferox thrives in well-drained soils and prefers a sunny to partly shaded position. It is highly wind-tolerant and drought-resistant once established, making it a resilient choice for low-maintenance gardens. Occasional deep watering while young and a light mulch at planting time will help your lancewood ferox settle in quickly. It rarely suffers from pests or diseases, making it an easy-care addition to your garden planting scheme.

Planting Lancewood Ferox with Other New Zealand Natives

This dramatic species works beautifully when planted alongside other Pseudopanax varieties such as Pseudopanax arboreus (Five-Finger), Pseudopanax crassifolius (Lancewood), Pseudopanax Cyril Watson, Pseudopanax lessonii (Coastal Five Finger), or Pseudopanax Gold Finger. This allows you to create an authentic native forest effect or a striking contrast in foliage form and colour.

Design Ideas for Lancewood Ferox

Lancewood ferox lends itself well to contemporary, architectural gardens, where its bold shape and texture can be shown off to best effect. Try planting in groups or as a structural specimen contrasted with softer plants, or underplant with native groundcovers for a low-maintenance, weed-suppressing layer. For seasonal interest, consider pairing with flowering trees such as Magnolia Amethyst Flame (Amethyst Flame Magnolia Tree) or Magnolia soulangeana Alba. For further visual variety, consider neighbouring with Acer Summer Surprise (Snake Bark), Metrosideros 'Harlequin', or Eucalyptus sideroxylon (Mugga).

Why Plant Lancewood Ferox?

If you’re seeking a visually striking, low-maintenance native with real character, lancewood ferox stands out as a superb choice. Whether in a home garden, city park, or a revegetation project, it offers both ecological value and instant drama. Its ability to withstand tough conditions, coupled with its fascinating life cycle, makes lancewood ferox a favourite among keen gardeners and landscape designers across New Zealand.
