Cherry Dawson

The 'Dawson' Cherry produces large, black coloured fruit in summer. The fruit has red flesh that is sweet with a lovely flavour. It requires another variety planted alongside (“a pollinator”) to produce good fruit yields, such as 'Early Rivers' or 'Stella'. This deciduous tree grows upright to about 5 m tall and 3 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. Cherries require a cold winter to set fruit, hence they are less suited to regions where winters tend to be mild. The 'Dawson' Cherry is commonly used for fruit production and makes an attractive tree in its own right.

Why Choose a Kwanzan Cherry Tree?

The Kwanzan cherry tree (Prunus serrulata 'Kanzan') is particularly prized for its profuse, vivid pink, double blossoms, which emerge in thick clusters along bare branches, creating dramatic contrast before the bright green foliage unfurls. Reaching an average height of 6-9 metres with a broad, vase-shaped canopy, the Kwanzan cherry tree provides ample shade, architectural structure, and exquisite seasonal colour. Unlike many other flowering cherries, Kwanzan is sterile and does not produce messy fruit, making it a tidy option for high-traffic areas and lawns.

Ideal Planting Locations and Growing Conditions

Best suited to well-drained, fertile soil in a sunny position, the Kwanzan cherry tree thrives in sheltered sites away from strong winds. This cherry tree is relatively hardy, tolerating New Zealand's variable climate. It performs best when planted with space to fully develop its characteristic spreading form. For urban-garden impact, plant specimens as standalone features; for a breathtaking seasonal avenue, line multiple trees along pathways or driveways.

Care and Maintenance Tips

The Kwanzan cherry tree is easy to maintain. Water generously during dry periods, particularly while young or during establishment, and mulch around the base to retain soil moisture. Prune lightly in late summer to remove dead or congested wood and to encourage airflow, minimising the risk of fungal problems. An annual feed with a general-purpose tree fertiliser in early spring will support healthy growth and prolific flowering.

Explore Other Cherry Trees

If you are interested in diversifying your orchard or garden with more flowering and fruiting cherry varieties, consider the delightful Prunus Accolade for an early blush of soft pink flowers. For fruit lovers, Cherry Rainier offers large, sweet yellow cherries with a red blush, while Cherry Dawson is renowned for its juicy, rich flavour. Those seeking compact varieties may also enjoy Cherry Modesto or the tart and tangy Cherry Griotella Frumi.

Add Structure and Spring Magic with Kwanzan

Transform your garden with the breathtaking display of the Kwanzan cherry tree. With minimal maintenance and unmatched seasonal beauty, it’s an inspiring choice for both new and established gardens. Browse our nursery’s selection and find the perfect ornamental or fruiting cherry tree to complement your landscape.
