Looking for a resilient, lush lawn that thrives all year in New Zealand conditions? A kikuyu ryegrass mix may be the perfect solution for your home, sports field, or landscaping project. Combining the heat and drought resistance of kikuyu with the quick establishment and winter greenness of perennial ryegrass, this blend creates a tough, attractive sward that endures through the seasons. Kikuyu (Blended Kikuyu Lawn Seed)

5 from 4 customers

A Kikuyu lawn is suited to warmer regions and coastal areas where hot and humid summers are less well suited to other turf species. The variety of Kikuyu grass seed sold by The Plant Company is Regal Green which produces a carpet of lush green leaves and tolerates both summer drought and high humidity. The Kikuyu grass seed sold by The Plant Company has 15% Kikuyu seed and 85% annual Italian ryegrass seed. This Kikuyu grass seed blend is a standard blend across the turf industry with the rye seed necessary to support the Kikuyu grass seedlings as they establish. The annual rye grass dies out at the end of the first summer to leave a pure stand of Kikuyu grass. The ideal mowing height is 25 mm and seeding rate is 40 grams per square metre. Kikuyu lawns are well suited to all regions from Waikato north.

Pure Kikuyu Seed

Kikuyu grass is suited to warmer regions and coastal areas where hot and humid summers are less well suited to other turf species. The variety of Kikuyu seed sold by The Plant Company is Regal Green which produces a carpet of lush green leaves and tolerates both summer drought and high humidity. It may brown off during winter as it goes dormant, but this is generally only for a short period. The ideal mowing height is 25 mm and seeding rate is 10 grams per square metre. Using less Kikuyu seed than this and weed intrusion can become problematic. Kikuyu lawns are well suited to regions from Waikato north and this product is 100% pure Kikuyu seed.

Why Choose a Kikuyu Ryegrass Mix?

One of the main advantages of a kikuyu ryegrass mix is its remarkable year-round coverage. Kikuyu grass flourishes in the warmer months, spreading vigorously and forming a dense cushion that stands up to wear and tear. However, it can brown off in winter, which is where ryegrass excels. Ryegrass germinates rapidly and stays richly green through colder weather, integrating beautifully with kikuyu’s thick thatch. The result? A robust, green lawn twelve months of the year, perfect for both family play areas and commercial spaces.

If you are interested in learning more about kikuyu’s performance, explore our Kikuyu (Blended Kikuyu Lawn Seed) and Pure Kikuyu Seed options to compare blends and pure varieties.

How to Use Kikuyu Ryegrass Mix

A kikuyu ryegrass mix is ideal for sowing on new lawns, repairing patchy areas, or overseeding to boost winter colour. To achieve the best results:

For those mainly interested in ryegrass, our Amenity Ryegrass Seed (Lawn Seed) is a great choice for rapid establishment and a fine-leaved finish.

Complementary Grasses and Plants

Mixing grasses like kikuyu and ryegrass creates a versatile, beautiful lawn, but ornamentals can add structure and year-round colour to your garden as well. Consider companion planting with striking grasses like Helictotrichon sempervirens (Blue Oatgrass) for silvery foliage, or use bamboo varieties such as Pleioblastus viridistriatus (Pleioblastus) to create visual interest and screening.
