cherry-dawson-2

Cherry Dawson

The 'Dawson' Cherry produces large, black coloured fruit in summer. The fruit has red flesh that is sweet with a lovely flavour. It requires another variety planted alongside (“a pollinator”) to produce good fruit yields, such as 'Early Rivers' or 'Stella'. This deciduous tree grows upright to about 5 m tall and 3 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. Cherries require a cold winter to set fruit, hence they are less suited to regions where winters tend to be mild. The 'Dawson' Cherry is commonly used for fruit production and makes an attractive tree in its own right.

Features of the Japanese Weeping Cherry Blossom Tree

The Japanese weeping cherry blossom tree stands out for its cascading branches that become enveloped in blossom from late September into October. The soft pink or white petals create a magical effect, often drifting to the ground like confetti. Mature trees typically reach a height of 4 to 6 metres with a similar spreading habit, making them ideal as a feature tree or planted in groups for dramatic effect.

As autumn arrives, the tree’s foliage transforms from lush green to brilliant shades of gold and orange, extending its season of interest. During winter, the bare, elegantly weeping form contrasts beautifully with evergreen plants and adds structural interest to the garden.

Planting and Care Tips

To enjoy the best from your Japanese weeping cherry blossom tree, plant it in a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil. Avoid exposed sites where spring winds could disrupt the delicate blooms. Young trees benefit from regular watering during dry spells, a layer of mulch to conserve moisture, and an annual spring feed with a balanced slow-release fertiliser. Minimal pruning is required—just remove dead or crossing branches after flowering to keep your tree healthy and shapely.

If you’re interested in complementing your cherry blossom display, consider pairing it with the stunning Prunus Accolade, an early flowering cherry renowned for its semi-double pink blooms.

Landscaping Ideas with Weeping Cherry Blossoms

Japanese weeping cherry blossom trees are remarkably versatile. They make spectacular lawn specimens, can frame entranceways, or soften the lines of walls and fences. For a truly serene setting, plant your weeping cherry near a pond or water feature, where the arching branches reflect beautifully across the water.

Looking for other ornamental or fruiting cherry trees? Our collection includes the delicious Cherry Rainier, classic Cherry Dawson, compact Cherry Modesto, and unusual Cherry Griotella Frumi—each offering its own unique shapes, blossom, and fruiting characteristics.
