Pieris Temple Bells, commonly known as the Lily of the Valley shrub, features chains of green-white buds which open to reveal pure white flowers. The flowers are mildly fragrant and are produced through winter and spring. They are complemented with glossy foliage which emerges bronze and matures to become dark green. The combination of flowers and foliage is very aesthetic as it grows to 1.2 m tall and the same wide. Pieris Temple Bells makes for a superb specimen in a small garden and is well suited to growing in a container, adding to mixed plantings, using in cottage gardens, or planting around outdoor living areas.

Features and Growing Habits

Japanese Pieris Temple Bells grows to an approximate height of 1.5–2 metres with a similar spread. New foliage emerges with an attractive reddish tint, maturing to glossy green through the season. Its signature feature is the abundance of creamy-white, pendulous flowers that resemble lily of the valley blooms, charming bees and early pollinators. The compact, bushy shape means minimal pruning is needed, making it ideal for both formal and informal settings.

Where to Plant Japanese Pieris Temple Bells

This versatile shrub thrives in partially shaded positions, such as under deciduous trees or on the southern side of buildings. Japanese Pieris Temple Bells prefers acidic, humus-rich, well-drained soils and benefits from a layer of mulch to keep roots cool and moist. Group with other acid-loving plants to create a lush, woodland-style border. Consider planting alongside Pieris Pink Delight (Lily Of The Valley Shrub Pieris japonica) for a blend of white and pink blooms, or Pieris japonica Dorothy Wyckoff (Dorothy Wyckoff Pieris Plant) to extend the flowering display.

Companion Plants and Design Tips

Japanese Pieris Temple Bells pairs beautifully with fellow shade-lovers like Pieris Lord Wakehurst (Lily Of The Valley Bush), Pieris Mountain Fire, or Pieris Shojo (Japanese Pieris). For added texture, contrast its glossy foliage with the dainty leaves of Hebe subalpina (Subalpine Hebe) or the vibrant, feathery presence of Nandina Moon Bay. Front your borders with Camellia 'Cinnamon Cindy' and Camellia Water Lily for a sequence of blooms, or incorporate the climbing Metrosideros fulgens if you’d like to cover pergolas with native flair.

Care and Maintenance

To keep Japanese Pieris Temple Bells looking its best, water regularly during dry periods and feed with a slow-release fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants each spring. Minimal pruning is required—simply remove any dead or damaged wood and spent flowers to encourage fresh growth. Protect from strong winds and harsh afternoon sun, especially in exposed sites. Japanese Pieris is generally resistant to pests and diseases, making it both low-maintenance and rewarding for all gardeners.

Embrace the year-round beauty and refined elegance of Japanese Pieris Temple Bells in your garden, and enjoy a reliable display of delicate blooms that announce the arrival of spring. Consider using other Pieris varieties and shade-loving companions from our shrub collection to create a layered, inviting landscape that thrives in New Zealand conditions.
