Jacaranda mimosifolia (Blue Jacaranda)

5 from 1 customers

Jacaranda mimosifolia, commonly known as the Blue Jacaranda tree, is a tropical-looking tree that is widely planted because of its beautiful and long-lasting blue flowers. Loose clusters of the deep blue-mauve flowers are borne across the tree through spring and summer. The dark green foliage has a fern-like appearance, and in warm climates, it remains evergreen; otherwise, it is deciduous. It typically grows to 12 m tall and 8 m wide. Jacaranda mimosifolia is commonly used in avenue plantings to provide an unforgettable sight, grown as a specimen, added to a mixed planting, or included in a ‘tropical’ garden.

Why Choose a Jacaranda mimosifolia tree?

If you’re searching for an eye-catching tree that’s relatively easy to care for, the jacaranda mimosifolia tree ticks all the boxes. Its signature trumpet-shaped flowers blanket the branches in spring and early summer, creating a soft, romantic carpet when petals fall. The lush, feathery leaves provide shade throughout the warmer months, making this tree a fantastic choice for patios and lawns where you’d like a canopy but not dense, dark shade. One of New Zealand’s most popular flowering trees, the jacaranda mimosifolia tree also attracts pollinators and adds biodiversity to your garden.

Planting and Care Tips for Jacaranda mimosifolia tree

For successful establishment, plant your jacaranda mimosifolia tree in a sheltered, frost-free spot with full sun exposure. While this tree is moderately drought-tolerant once mature, regular watering during its first few years helps ensure healthy growth. Soil should be well-drained and fertile. To encourage lush foliage and blooms, consider feeding with a specialist fertiliser such as Tree Fertiliser (Tree Fertiliser). Mulching around the base aids moisture retention and protects roots.

Pruning is mostly limited to occasional shaping and removing deadwood; avoid heavy cutting, especially while the tree is young, to protect its natural form. If you’re looking to plant alongside other trees for contrasting or complementary colour, the Cercis canadensis Texas White is a superb companion with crisp white spring blossoms.

Garden Design Ideas Using Jacaranda mimosifolia tree

The jacaranda mimosifolia tree is ideal for feature planting in large gardens, avenues, and public spaces. It also suits suburban gardens where its delicate foliage is not overpowering. For layered landscaping, mix with evergreens or architectural forms such as Sequoiadendron giganteum (Sequoia gigantea Tree) for year-round interest. If your garden features palms, ensure their health with Palm Tree Fertiliser (Palm Tree Fertiliser) for robust growth alongside your flowering jacaranda.
