Features and Growing Tips

Imperata cylindrica ‘Red Baron’ is renowned for its upright green foliage, which gradually transforms into brilliant shades of red during the warmer months. The vivid crimson highlights intensify through late summer and autumn, creating a dynamic patchwork of colour. This grass grows to about 40–60 cm tall, making it ideal for edging pathways, filling spaces between perennials, or softening hard landscaping.

This hardy perennial thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-draining soil. While imperata cylindrica is adaptable to a range of conditions, it performs best when planted where the soil doesn’t dry out completely. Once established, Japanese Blood Grass is relatively low-maintenance, requiring only occasional tidying of dead foliage at the end of winter.

Ideal Uses in New Zealand Gardens

Imperata cylindrica is perfect for adding movement and year-round visual interest. Its bold colour provides dramatic contrast alongside green or bronze grasses. Try pairing it with Carex flagellifera Green for a lush, textured border, or combine with Acorus gramineus 'Ogon' to highlight its red tones against gold foliage. Imperata cylindrica also works beautifully in containers, offering compact size and colour wherever you need quick impact.

Japanese Blood Grass brings striking contrast in contemporary planting schemes, looks spectacular when mass-planted to create a living carpet, and can be tucked between rocks and paving for a soft, naturalistic effect.

Companion Planting and Alternatives

Looking for complementary grasses or foliage plants? Imperata cylindrica pairs well with many ornamental options. Consider the fine-formed Carex Bronze Delight (Bronze Sedge) for a warm-toned combination, or try the cascading form of Liriope 'Emerald Cascade' to introduce softer texture and gentle movement. For bold foliage intrigue, the upright spikes of Liriope 'Elmarco' echo the drama of Japanese Blood Grass and create a cohesive design in borders and beds.

Care and Maintenance

Imperata cylindrica is robust and reliably pest-free, but it appreciates regular mulching to conserve soil moisture. Cut back old foliage in late winter before new growth begins for tidier appearance. In colder regions, Japanese Blood Grass remains perennial and bounces back with fresh new leaves each spring. Avoid planting in very dry or drought-prone spots, as this will limit its colour performance.

Imperata cylindrica ‘Red Baron’ is an easy, rewarding addition to garden landscapes, promising dramatic red colour and architectural impact year after year. Add it to your planting palette for a garden display that turns heads and celebrates the beauty of ornamental grasses.
