Features of Hydrangea quercifolia ruby slippers

Hydrangea quercifolia ruby slippers is prized for its compact size, reaching around 1 metre tall and wide. It’s perfect for smaller gardens or modern landscapes where space is at a premium. The oak-shaped foliage emerges bright green in spring before deepening in summer and erupting into rich burgundy tones in autumn. Its large, cone-shaped blooms open pure white, gradually transitioning to a lush ruby-pink as the summer progresses—hence the name 'ruby slippers'. Compared to other oakleaf hydrangeas, ruby slippers offers a neater, less sprawling growth habit and exceptionally vivid flower colour.

Ideal Garden Uses

Thanks to its manageable size and showy appearance, hydrangea quercifolia ruby slippers fits beautifully into a range of settings. Use it in mixed shrub borders, cottage gardens, or natural woodland plantings. Its striking blooms and foliage make it an ideal focal point in the garden, especially when paired with companion plants like ferns or hostas. For a layered effect using oakleaf hydrangeas, try mixing ruby slippers with other varieties such as Hydrangea quercifolia 'Burgundy' or Hydrangea quercifolia Snowflake.

Planting and Care Tips

Hydrangea quercifolia ruby slippers prefers part shade but can tolerate morning sun. Plant it in moist, well-drained soil for the best flower display. It’s tolerant of most New Zealand conditions, but sheltering from harsh afternoon sun will help the blooms and foliage retain their vivid colours. Pruning is rarely needed—simply remove faded flowers for tidiness and let the shrub develop its natural shape. Mulch annually with organic material to keep roots cool and promote healthy growth. Oakleaf hydrangeas like ruby slippers are resistant to most pests and diseases, making them a low-maintenance choice.
