Growing and Caring for Hydrangeas in NZ

Hydrangeas are remarkably adaptable, provided you give them the right conditions. Most varieties thrive in part-shade, sheltered from harsh midday sun and strong winds. They appreciate rich, free-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. A regular mulch and deep watering during dry spells will keep your plants healthy and flowering.

Pruning is best done in late winter or early spring. Remove older stems to encourage new growth and bigger blooms, and always deadhead spent flowers once blooming has finished. The colour of some hydrangeas can even be influenced by soil pH—bluer in acidic soils and more pink in alkaline conditions.
