Why Choose Hostas?

Hostas are treasured for their stunning leaves, ranging from deep greens and blues to variegated and creamy whites. They thrive in moist, shady spots where other plants struggle, making them the perfect solution for under trees, along paths, or beside your house. Their foliage adds architectural interest and texture, and most hostas produce delightful spikes of lavender or white flowers during summer, attracting pollinators.

If you’re after a statement hosta, Hosta Patriot delivers beautiful white-edged leaves that brighten up any shade garden. Meanwhile, Hosta Loyalist offers dramatic contrast with its unique creamy white centers and deep green margins—ideal for bold plantings.

Hostas vs. Bunnings Selection

While Bunnings might carry standard hosta varieties, specialist nurseries offer rare cultivars and healthy, NZ-grown plants tailored to local conditions. We pride ourselves on providing strong, healthy hostas that thrive in Kiwi gardens. Our hostas are carefully selected for disease resistance, robust growth, and striking beauty.

Hostas are remarkably easy to grow in New Zealand. They prefer damp, well-drained soils and are blissfully low maintenance. If you’re pairing hostas with other shade-loving perennials, consider adding colorful coral bells like Heuchera Dark Secret (Coral Bells), Heuchera Northern Exposure Black (Coral Bells), or Heuchera Peppermint Spice (Coral Bells). These heucheras offer dazzling leaves and complement hostas in mixed plantings beautifully.

Tips for Growing Hostas in New Zealand

If you’re new to hostas—or disappointed with limited selection at Bunnings—here’s how to succeed:

Summer is the best time to appreciate hostas’ dramatic foliage and flower spikes. With the right garden spot, hostas can thrive for decades, offering lush ground cover and easy-care beauty.

Discover the Perfect Hostas for Your Garden

While the phrase "hostas bunnings" may spark your initial search, true hosta aficionados know that specialist nurseries provide the widest, healthiest, and most exciting range. Explore varieties like Hosta Patriot and Hosta Loyalist, and pair them with coral bells like Heuchera Dark Secret (Coral Bells), Heuchera Northern Exposure Black (Coral Bells), or Heuchera Peppermint Spice (Coral Bells) for the ultimate shade garden. Let your garden shine with the unique, vibrant hostas that only specialist nurseries can provide.
