What is a Hemerocallis Daylily?

The hemerocallis daylily, scientifically known as Hemerocallis, is not a true lily but shares similar trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom for a single day—hence the name “daylily.” However, each stem produces multiple buds, resulting in weeks of continuous colour. Hemerocallis daylilies are admired for their adaptability, tolerating drought, poor soils, and coastal winds—making them a reliable option for Kiwi gardeners seeking effortless impact.

Standout Varieties of Hemerocallis Daylily

Daylilies come in a range of hues and habits, each with unique appeal for the home gardener. Explore some exceptional options available in New Zealand gardens:

How to Grow Hemerocallis Daylily in New Zealand

Daylilies thrive in full sun but will tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter regions. They prefer well-drained soil and benefit from annual feeding and mulching in early spring. Hemerocallis daylily is frost-hardy and, once established, remarkably drought tolerant, making them excellent for eco-friendly gardening. For best results, divide clumps every 3–5 years to rejuvenate growth and maximise flowering.

Perfect Uses for Hemerocallis Daylily

Hemerocallis daylilies are wonderful for adding colour to borders, mass planting for ground cover, or edging pathways. Their resilience makes them ideal for low-maintenance gardens, public plantings, and challenging sites such as slopes and coastal areas. The striking flowers also work well as cut blooms, and their tidy foliage remains attractive well after flowering.

Add a touch of low-fuss elegance and enduring colour to your outdoor space with a hemerocallis daylily. Their effortless beauty and robust performance make them a must-have in every New Zealand garden.
