Appearance and Growth Habits

Hebe recurva features striking, narrow, recurved leaves that create a shimmering, textured effect in the garden. Typically growing to about 60cm high and wide, it retains a neat, mounding shape without extensive pruning. Small white or pale lilac flowers appear in summer, attracting bees and pollinators, though the real highlight is its beautifully coloured foliage that looks great all year. The silver-green hue pairs well with both native and exotic plantings.

Ideal Growing Conditions

To thrive, hebe recurva prefers a sunny to partial shade position in well-drained soil. It tolerates coastal winds and is relatively drought-hardy once established, making it an excellent selection for exposed gardens in New Zealand’s varied climates. Plant hebe recurva where it can be appreciated up close—along pathways, as an edging plant, or in raised beds. Water regularly during its first growing season, then reduce frequency as the roots establish.

Using Hebe Recurva in the Garden

Because of its compact size, hebe recurva is perfect for small urban gardens or as part of a mixed shrub border. Its tidy shape and silvery leaves contrast beautifully with darker-leaved varieties. Try mass planting hebe recurva for a soft-textured, low-maintenance groundcover. For more visual interest, combine it with other eye-catching Hebe varieties such as Hebe Caledonia for deep purple foliage, or highlight the unique leaf shapes of Hebe Inspiration and Hebe Black Satin. These combinations bring a dynamic blend of colours and textures to any NZ garden.

Maintenance and Care

Hebe recurva requires very little attention once established. Prune lightly after flowering to encourage a dense habit and tidy up any unruly stems. Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Thanks to its robust nature, hebe recurva is generally pest and disease resistant, supporting low-input, sustainable gardening practices. Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in early spring for best results.
