Why Choose Hebe Purple Foliage Plants?

The unique colour tones of hebe purple foliage can transform a planting scheme. These varieties often display deep purple, maroon, or bronze shades—sometimes with new growth appearing almost black before maturing to a rich plum. The intensity of the foliage colour is most pronounced during cooler months, making these hebes invaluable for adding winter interest when other plants are dormant. Hebe purple foliage also highlights silver, green, or golden-leaved companions, making them easy to combine with both native and exotic plants.

Top Hebe Varieties with Striking Purple Foliage

If you’re eager to add some drama to your planting, several standout varieties feature the sought-after purple hues:

For those looking for a flowering partner with attractive foliage, Hebe Inspiration combines glossy evergreen leaves with dense spikes of lavender blooms each summer, marrying foliage beauty with floral appeal.

Growing and Caring for Hebe Purple Foliage Varieties

Hebe purple foliage plants are easy-care choices for New Zealand gardens. Most thrive in full sun or light shade and tolerate a range of soils, provided they’re well-drained. Add a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. They are resistant to wind, coastal conditions, and light frost—making them suitable for a variety of locations, from city courtyards to exposed rural spots.

Water newly planted hebes well until established. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain their shape and encourage fresh new growth, which often shows the deepest purple tints. With minimal care, hebes deliver reliable colour and structure for years to come.

Design Ideas with Hebe Purple Foliage

Create dynamic hedging by combining different hebe varieties, or use a single specimen as a focal point in containers. Try pairing hebe purple foliage varieties with silvery natives, grasses, or flowering perennials for maximum visual interest. These versatile shrubs also make striking underplantings for trees or as anchors in mixed borders.
