Loved by gardeners and bees alike, Grosso is the go-to lavender for spectacular summer colour and an abundance of aromatic blooms that are perfect for drying, fresh bouquets, or homemade lavender oil. Lavandula Grosso

5 from 1 customers

Lavandula Grosso is a larger Lavender variety that grows compactly and carries masses of long, dark blue flower spikes through spring and summer. The foliage is green with a touch of grey and complements the flowers nicely as it grows to 75 cm tall and the same wide. Lavandula Grosso is commonly used in cottage gardens, included in mixed plantings and borders, trimmed into a low hedge, planted around outdoor living areas, or maintained in a container. It is also well suited to mass planting on a bank or using as a groundcover and in both cases produces a stunning display.

Why Grow Grosso Lavender Plants?

Grosso lavender plants are favourites for a reason. Their long, silvery foliage and fat flower heads burst into bloom from late spring through summer, attracting pollinators and creating a calming, Mediterranean vibe. These hardy perennials offer excellent drought resistance once established, making them ideal for Kiwi gardens where water conservation often matters. Whether you love fragrant pathways, massed planting, or want a natural pest deterrent near your veggie patch, Grosso delivers it all.

Growing and Care Tips for Grosso Lavender

Grosso lavender plants are easy to cultivate if given the right conditions. Choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil; adding a little grit or sand can help if your garden tends toward clay. Lavender dislikes soggy roots, so avoid low-lying spots that hold water. Pruning after flowering keeps your plants bushy and stops them from getting woody with age—just a quick trim is all you need. A light feed with a specialist lavender fertiliser in spring gives them the boost to flower their socks off.

Uses for Grosso Lavender

Not only are Grosso lavender plants spectacular in the landscape, they’re endlessly versatile indoors too. Their intensely aromatic flowers are ideal for cutting and drying, filling the house with fragrance for months. Grosso is the number one choice for those making lavender wands, sachets, or experimenting with homemade bath and beauty products. In edible landscapes or kitchen gardens, use their blossoms to infuse sugar, honey, or vinegars.

Discover Other Stunning Lavenders

If you’re collecting different colours or shapes, consider complementing your Grosso with vibrant Lavandula Razzleberry Ruffles (Pink Lavender) for a unique rosy twist, or the deep hues of Lavandula Lavance Purple. For a classic English shape, Lavandula angustifolia makes for a timeless pairing. Prefer an unusual form? Lavandula Helmsdale and Lavandula Avonview both bring flair to your lavender collection.

Pairing Grosso Lavender in Your Garden

Lavender is a fabulous companion in mixed shrub borders and cottage gardens. Plant Grosso alongside flowering shrubs like Hydrangea Voster Fruhot or the striking Viburnum opulus Notcutt's Varieity (Snowball Bush) for dramatic seasonal interest. For textural contrast, add New Zealand natives like Coprosma Wharariki Beach or stylish evergreens such as Loropetalum 'Plum Gorgeous'.

Grosso lavender plants will reward you with year-round structure, head-turning colour, and effortless fragrance—making them truly essential for your New Zealand garden.
