Why Choose a Grevillea Tree?

Grevillea trees are celebrated for their hardiness and minimal maintenance requirements. These Australian natives thrive in New Zealand’s mild climate and tolerate coastal winds, drought, and poor soils once established. From gardens to lifestyle blocks, grevillea trees are a favourite for their ability to add vibrant colour and texture, particularly during the cooler months when other plants may be resting.

Popular Grevillea Tree Varieties in New Zealand

One outstanding species is Grevillea barklyana, which stands out as a tall, graceful tree with cascading leaves and impressive reddish-mauve flowers through autumn and winter. If you’re after hedging or screening, Grevillea Gold Rush (Gold Rush Grevillea) brings golden blooms and dense foliage, making it ideal for privacy alongside pathways or boundaries.

For gardeners looking to cover more ground, Grevillea Fanfare (Grevillea austraflora Fanfare) is a unique groundcover with its low-growing habit and eye-catching spider flowers. Those seeking distinctive shrubs will appreciate standout cultivars like Grevillea poorinda Rondeau (Rondeau Grevillea) and Grevillea Tranquillity (Tranquillity Grevillea), both excellent companions for any grevillea tree selection.

Planting and Caring for a Grevillea Tree

Site your grevillea tree in full sun or partial shade, ensuring the soil is well-draining. These trees dislike wet feet, so raised beds or sloping sites are best if you have heavy clay or soggy ground. Water well when first planted, then reduce irrigation as your grevillea establishes. A light tip prune after flowering encourages bushiness and even more blooms the following season.

Grevilleas prefer low-phosphorus fertilisers, so opt for blends designed for native plants. Mulching around the base will keep roots cool and preserve moisture, but leave room around the trunk to prevent rot.

Grevillea Tree Benefits and Garden Uses

Beyond their beauty, grevillea trees are perfect for creating wildlife-friendly gardens. Their nectar-rich flowers are magnets for tūī, bellbirds, and bees, supporting local biodiversity. Create a layered garden by planting smaller shrubs such as Grevillea Gold Rush (Gold Rush Grevillea) or groundcovers like Grevillea Fanfare (Grevillea austraflora Fanfare) beneath your grevillea tree for a naturalistic look and all-season interest.

Whether you’re aiming for drought-tolerance, long-lasting flowers, or low-maintenance landscaping, the grevillea tree is a top choice for New Zealand gardens. Explore our full range—including favourites like Grevillea barklyana—and bring a burst of colour and life into your outdoor space.
