Why Choose a Grevillea rosmarinifolia Hedge?

Grevillea rosmarinifolia hedges offer year-round visual appeal, with their vibrant flowers appearing from winter through spring and often into early summer. The nectar-rich blooms are a magnet for tui, silvereye, and bellbirds, making your garden a haven for wildlife. The narrow, aromatic leaves resemble those of the rosemary herb, adding fine texture and interest even when the plant isn’t in flower.

Unlike many traditional hedge plants, a Grevillea rosmarinifolia hedge thrives in challenging conditions. It tolerates coastal winds, dry soils, and even mild frosts, making it ideal for Kiwi landscapes from the Far North to the colder South Island gardens. Once established, these hardy shrubs require minimal watering and little to no fertiliser.

Planting and Maintaining Your Hedge

Site your Grevillea rosmarinifolia hedge in a sunny location with well-draining soil to promote the best flowering and compact growth habit. Space plants 80cm to 1m apart for a dense screen, and water regularly until your young shrubs are well-rooted. Grevilleas dislike heavy, waterlogged soils; if drainage is a concern, plant on a low mound. Mulch lightly and avoid feeding with phosphate-heavy fertilisers.

Shaping your hedge is simple—an annual prune after flowering helps maintain its tidy form and encourages bushier growth. Unlike hedges that require frequent shearing, Grevillea rosmarinifolia maintains a natural, relaxed outline with only light maintenance.

Great Companion Grevilleas for Hedges

Mixing different grevilleas can provide extended flowering and varied foliage in your garden hedge. For more rosy tones, consider adding Grevillea Pink Pixie (Pink Pixie Grevillea) or the vibrant Grevillea Crimson Villea (Crimson Villea Grevillea) to your hedge. The compact Grevillea Scarlet Sprite (Grevillea rosmarinifolia Scarlet Sprite) and soft-leaved Grevillea lanigera Lutea (Grevillea Lutea) are also excellent alternatives or companions for a mixed hedge, all sharing similar hardiness and bird-attracting qualities.
