What Is Green Cordyline?

Green cordyline describes several species and cultivars within the Cordyline genus characterised by their verdant, glossy foliage. Unlike their vividly coloured relatives, green cordylines feature fresh shades of green, which create a calming, natural look. Typically, they are evergreen and can reach between one metre in compact varieties and up to six metres in mature tree-form species, making them flexible for use as feature plants, screening, or underplanting.

Popular green cordyline varieties include Cordyline Kirkii, a dense, bushy shrub ideal for low borders and tropical gardens, and Cordyline australis, the iconic New Zealand cabbage tree that towers with its elegant, slender trunk and tufts of green leaves.

Uses for Green Cordyline in New Zealand Gardens

Green cordyline thrives in a wide range of conditions and suits many garden styles. Its striking foliage offers excellent contrast when paired with flowering perennials or grasses. Plant them along fences for a natural green screen or use a single green cordyline as a focal point in a container for patios and entrances. The resilience of green cordyline to wind, salt spray, and periods of drought makes it especially valuable for coastal or exposed sites.

For those wanting variety, try combining green cordyline with more colourful options like Cordyline fruticosa, which offers eye-catching purple and pink tones. Or, for structural height and a strong presence, consider Cordyline Broadsword.

How to Grow and Care for Green Cordyline

One of the best things about green cordyline is how easy it is to grow. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun for best foliage colour, though green cordyline also adapts well to light shade. Water young plants regularly until established, then reduce watering as the plant matures. Green cordyline seldom needs much attention—just an occasional tidy-up of older leaves and a slow-release fertiliser in spring.

Cordyline plants are naturally hardy, but protection from severe frost is recommended in inland regions. For related, narrow-leaved species suited to similar conditions, explore understated options like Cordyline stricta.
