Why Choose a Graham Thomas Rose Bush?

The graham thomas rose bush is celebrated for its unique combination of rich colour, upright growth habit, and exceptional repeat flowering. The large, cupped blooms display a warm golden yellow, remaining vibrant throughout the season—perfect for brightening up any outdoor space. This rose is also highly resistant to common diseases, making it an easy-care option for most New Zealand climates.

If you’re looking for a climbing alternative that still retains the charm of the classic graham thomas rose bush, consider pairing it with Lonicera periclymenum 'Graham Thomas'. This honeysuckle offers fragrant blooms and flexible growth, ideal for trellises or archways.

Planting and Care Tips

Establishing a healthy graham thomas rose bush begins with choosing a sunny, sheltered spot. Roses thrive in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. When planting, give your bush plenty of space—about a metre between plants—to promote airflow and reduce disease risk. Deep watering at the base and regular mulching will support strong roots and lush flowers. Prune in winter to encourage new growth and shape.

Looking to create a striking rose garden? Mix the graham thomas rose bush with other David Austin varieties like Rose Diamonds Forever for a more varied palette. Their contrasting colours and fragrances will add extra depth and romance to your beds.

Styling Graham Thomas Roses in Your Garden

Nothing rivals the visual impact of a mature graham thomas rose bush nestled among flowering companions. Pair your Graham Thomas with ornamental shrubs like Weigela Wine And Roses (Wine & Roses Weigela), which boasts dramatic foliage and vibrant blooms for continuous interest. For more formal settings, consider training your graham thomas as a standard tree using the Rose Graham Thomas Standard—perfect for pots, patios, or structured borders.
