Why Choose the Gold Medal Rose Plant?

The gold medal rose plant has earned its accolades for good reason. Its large, multi-petalled flowers appear in flushes from spring through late autumn, casting a warm, sunny glow even on overcast New Zealand days. The glossy, dark green foliage offers a stunning contrast to the vivid blooms, making each flower pop in the garden. This rose’s upright growth habit makes it perfect for hedges, single specimen plantings, or mingling with companion plants in mixed beds.

Classic fragrance is another hallmark; gold medal rose flowers deliver a subtle, sweet scent that’s perfect for cutting and bringing indoors. Unlike more delicate rose varieties, the gold medal rose is bred for durability, with excellent resistance to common rose ailments such as black spot and powdery mildew.

Planting and Care Tips

To get the best from your gold medal rose plant, choose a sunny location that receives at least six hours of sunlight daily. Well-drained soil enriched with compost creates the ideal foundation for vigorous growth. When planting, be sure to water thoroughly and mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Regular feeding with a balanced rose fertiliser keeps your plant healthy and maximises bloom production.

Prune annually in late winter or early spring, removing dead or weak branches to encourage strong new growth. This routine keeps your gold medal rose looking its very best throughout the season.

Stunning Companions and Alternatives

Pair your gold medal rose plant with other standout varieties for a garden bursting with colour and style. For an elegant rose display, consider adding Rose Diamonds Forever, which delights with its blush-pink shimmering petals, or the sun-loving Rose Flower Carpet Gold for a profusion of golden blooms in groundcover form. Try Rose Ann Turner if you’re looking for classic beauty in a romantic red.

For contrasting interest in your borders, mix in the vivid and drought-tolerant Portulaca Pazzaz Sunset (Moss Rose Plant), or consider Escallonia 'Gold Brian' for evergreen structure and additional golden foliage highlights. These combinations ensure your garden is lively and colourful throughout the seasons.
