What is a Gaura Butterfly Bush?

Although commonly called "gaura butterfly bush", this plant's botanical name is Gaura lindheimeri, and it's widely celebrated for its airy sprays of white or pink blooms. Resilient and drought-tolerant, gaura thrives in New Zealand's varied climates, handling both sandy and clay soils with ease. The tall, wiry stems wave clusters of star-shaped flowers, often visited by bees and butterflies, which explains the charming nickname.

Explore more gaura varieties like Gaura Whirling Butterflies or the classic Gaura lindheimeri to add texture and movement to any planting scheme.

Why Grow Gaura Butterfly Bush?

Gaura butterfly bush is adored by gardeners for several reasons. Its continuous flowering period ensures visual appeal for months on end, while its relaxed, cottage-garden vibe fits contemporary landscapes too. As a bonus, it's remarkably pest-resistant and doesn’t need constant watering or deadheading, making it perfect for busy gardeners or those planting in exposed, coastal gardens.

Keen on compact forms? Gaura Rainbow Petite is ideal for containers or small garden spaces, while larger cultivars—such as Gaura 'The Bride'—create height and drama in mixed borders.

How to Grow and Care for Gaura

Plant your gaura butterfly bush in full sun and well-drained soil for best results. Once established, gaura tolerates dry spells and doesn’t demand rich soils—over-feeding can actually reduce flowering. Mulch in spring to keep roots cool, and trim back spent flower stems in late autumn to maintain a tidy shape and encourage new growth in the following season.

For a striking effect, pair gaura with ornamental grasses or companion it with perennials like lavender and salvia for extended interest. If you want a vibrant twist, Gaura 'Red Monarch' brings bold colour to your garden palette.

Best Gaura Butterfly Bush Varieties for NZ Gardens

There are several outstanding gaura varieties perfect for New Zealand gardens. The airy Gaura Whirling Butterflies is renowned for its pure white blooms, while Gaura Rainbow Petite offers subtle pinks on compact plants. For a romantic look, Gaura 'The Bride' is a garden favourite, and Gaura 'Red Monarch' delivers striking shades of rose-red.

Explore our selection and discover how gaura butterfly bush can become a favourite feature in your garden, attracting butterflies and delighting the eye all season long.
