What is Gardenia Prostrata (Gardenia radicans)?

Gardenia prostrata, or Gardenia radicans, is a dwarf form of the classic gardenia that grows low and wide. Unlike its taller cousins, this variety rarely exceeds 30 cm in height, but it can spread over a metre across, filling garden beds with year-round glossy, dark green foliage. From late spring through summer, it produces an abundance of pure white, waxy flowers that release a rich, sweet perfume. These blooms gradually fade to cream, extending the display across the warmer months.

Why Choose Gardenia Prostrata for Your Garden?

Gardenia prostrata is ideal for Kiwi gardeners wanting a reliable, scented groundcover. Its prostrate habit means it’s fantastic for softening the edges of paths or garden beds, spilling elegantly over retaining walls, or creating fragrant carpets beneath taller shrubs. This variety thrives in full sun to partial shade and, with a little shelter from harsh winds and well-drained soil, it’s remarkably hardy. It also grows beautifully in large pots on decks or patios, making it a versatile choice for small spaces.

Caring for Gardenia Prostrata

To get the most from your gardenia prostrata, plant it in slightly acidic, rich soil and mulch well. Keep it consistently moist, especially during dry spells, and feed regularly with a specialist gardenia fertiliser to promote glossy leaves and plenty of blooms. Protect young plants from severe frosts, and prune lightly after flowering to maintain a neat, bushy shape.

Other Groundcover and Gardenia Varieties

If you love the look and scent of gardenias, explore other easy-care favourites such as Gardenia Veitchii, Gardenia Professor Pucci, or the golden-flowering Gardenia Golden Magic. For gardens craving year-round bloom, try Gardenia Four Seasons, or for a uniquely decorative form, Gardenia Lace Lady.

Should you be searching for other excellent groundcovers, consider pairing gardenia prostrata with native and exotic species such as Fuchsia procumbens (Creeping Fuchsia), Genista pilosa (Gold Broom), Grevillea Gaudichaudii (Grevillea x gaudichaudii), Myoporum Coarse Leaf Pink (Myoporum Plant), or Acaena caesiiglauca (Bidibidi). Mixing and matching these varieties can create colourful, textured, and fragrant borders throughout your garden.

Bring Your Garden to Life with Gardenia Prostrata

With gardenia prostrata, you get the best of both worlds: easy-care, evergreen foliage and exquisite fragrance in a space-saving, ground-hugging form. Whether used as a border, a groundcover, or a stunning container specimen, gardenia prostrata is sure to delight both you and your garden visitors year after year.
