Why Grow Gardenias in New Zealand

Gardenias are prized for their elegant, creamy flowers and intoxicating scent, which can fill your garden or patio with sweet fragrance from spring through summer. These evergreen shrubs perform well across much of New Zealand, particularly in mild, frost-free regions. With their lush leaves and tidy growth, gardenias are just as attractive when not in bloom, making them a stylish addition for year-round interest.

Choosing the Best Gardenia Varieties

Not sure which gardenia is right for your patch? There are several gardenia varieties ideal for NZ gardens, each offering unique features to suit your space and climate.

Browse our range and choose the gardenia that best suits your needs and tastes.

Tips for Planting and Caring for Gardenias

To get the most from your gardenia, plant it in free-draining, slightly acidic soil with plenty of organic matter. Position your shrub in a spot with filtered sunlight or morning sun, sheltered from harsh afternoon rays and wind. Mulch well, and water consistently, especially during dry periods.

Gardenias like stable conditions, so avoid chopping and changing their location once planted. Feed spring to late summer with a specialised azalea and camellia fertiliser for the strongest growth and best flowering.
