feijoa sellowiana tree

The feijoa sellowiana tree, also known as pineapple guava or guavasteen, is a hardy, evergreen fruit tree treasured in New Zealand gardens for its lush foliage, striking flowers, and uniquely aromatic fruit. With its ability to tolerate a variety of conditions and deliver generous crops of delicious feijoa fruit, this versatile tree makes the perfect addition to both urban backyards and lifestyle blocks.

Feijoa sellowiana

Feijoa sellowiana, commonly known as Brazilian Guava or Pineapple Guava, is one of the original Feijoa varieties from which many new varieties have been bred. This late-season producer bears fruit in autumn, which is medium-sized and very tasty. This evergreen shrub typically grows to 3 m tall and 2 m wide but is often trimmed to smaller sizes. Feijoa sellowiana is commonly grown for fruit production, trimmed into a hedge, used for screening, or added to a mixed planting. We recommend planting at least two varieties to provide for a more extended fruiting period and ensure better pollination.

Why Choose a Feijoa sellowiana Tree for Your Garden?

Feijoa sellowiana trees are loved for their adaptability and productivity. They're frost-hardy, wind-tolerant, and resistant to many common pests and diseases, making them a low-maintenance choice for Kiwi gardeners. Once established, these trees are drought-tolerant and can thrive in both coastal and inland environments across New Zealand. Their attractive, leathery green leaves and showy red and white flowers add year-round interest to your landscape, while the sweet, tangy fruit can be enjoyed fresh, in baking, or preserved.

Planting and Caring for Your Feijoa sellowiana Tree

The best time to plant your feijoa sellowiana tree is in autumn or early spring, giving the roots a head start before the active growing season. Plant in a sunny to partially shaded spot in well-drained soil. Water deeply during the growing period and keep mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. While feijoas are partially self-fertile, planting more than one variety—such as Feijoa 'Mammoth', Feijoa 'Opal Star', or Feijoa 'Unique'—will ensure better pollination and bigger crops.

Prune your tree after fruiting to encourage airflow and healthy new growth. Regular feeding with a balanced fertiliser in early spring also supports heavy harvests.

Feijoa Varieties for Every Kiwi Home

Not all feijoa sellowiana trees are the same—different varieties suit different garden sizes and taste preferences. Feijoa 'Apollo' yields exceptionally large, juicy fruit, while compact types like Feijoa 'Bambina' are ideal for pots or smaller sections. Mix and match multiple cultivars for an extended harvest window and improved pollination.

If you love growing your own fruit, consider partnering your feijoa sellowiana tree with other reliable fruiting trees, such as Cherry Montmorency, Apple Northern Spy (Northern Spy Apple), Avocado 'Reed', Avocado 'Bacon', or Pear Stark Crimson (Stark Crimson Pear), to create a productive and diverse home orchard.

Taste, Nutrition, and Uses

Feijoa fruit from the feijoa sellowiana tree are a real seasonal treat in late autumn. Inside their green exterior is fragrant, tangy-sweet pulp that’s rich in vitamin C, dietary fibre, and antioxidants—all essential for a healthy lifestyle. Enjoy them fresh off the tree, scooped with a spoon, or use them in smoothies, crumbles, jams, and chutneys for a classic New Zealand flavour.
