What Makes a Hydrangea Fast Growing?

Not every hydrangea grows at the same pace. A fast growing hydrangea typically establishes quickly within its first planting season, sending out abundant shoots and filling out into a substantial shrub. The secret often lies in their species and variety, as well as their ideal placement, rich soil, and consistent watering. Mophead hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) and some serrata varieties are particularly noted for their speedy annual growth, which can be as much as 60cm or more per year in ideal conditions.

Best Fast Growing Hydrangea Varieties

Certain hydrangea cultivars are sought-after for their rapid development and exceptional floral displays. Among customer favourites are:

Hydrangea 'Harlequin' – This stunning variety not only grows quickly, but also offers eye-catching two-tone blooms that add a touch of whimsy to any garden setting.
Hydrangea Garten Baudirektor Kuhnert – Known for its vigorous habit, this hydrangea variety rewards patient gardeners with lush, rounded clusters of flowers and reliable season-long growth.
Hydrangea 'Saxon Pink Maiden' – Loved for its striking pink blossoms and energetic development, this variety is a top choice for those looking to fill a garden bed quickly.

For something a bit different, consider Hydrangea serrata Preziosa for dense, compact growth and unique colour shifts throughout the seasons, or the elegantly profuse Hydrangea 'Blueberries and Cream', perfect for a mixed border.

Growing Tips for Vigorous Hydrangeas

To get the fastest growth from your hydrangea, plant in a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade—New Zealand’s climate is ideal for this. Enrich the soil with compost and mulch well to retain moisture. Hydrangeas thrive on regular watering, especially during dry spells. Pruning annually after flowering (usually in late winter or early spring) will encourage bushier new growth and more prolific blooms. Feed your hydrangea with a balanced fertiliser in spring to promote healthy foliage and strong flowering.
