falling snow cherry tree

The graceful falling snow cherry tree (Prunus 'Falling Snow') is a standout ornamental tree beloved by New Zealand gardeners for its delicate white blooms and elegant weeping habit. Celebrated as one of the most picturesque cherry trees, it delivers a breathtaking spring display that truly lives up to its enchanting name. With cascades of pure white flowers, the falling snow cherry tree creates the effect of a gentle spring snowfall, making it a perfect choice for adding beauty and movement to urban gardens and larger landscapes alike.

Prunus Falling Snow

Prunus Falling Snow is a variety of Flowering Cherry grown for its pendulous growth and fantastic flowering. It features masses of single, white flowers which are borne before the foliage emerges. The foliage emerges a fresh green colour in spring, ages to dark green, then develops yellow, orange, and red tones in autumn before falling. The branches are held with a pendulous manner as it grows to 2 m tall and 1.5 m wide. Prunus Falling Snow is a stunning tree and is commonly used in smaller gardens, grown as a specimen, added to a mixed planting, included in Japanese and cottage gardens, or planted around outdoor living areas.

Why Choose a Falling Snow Cherry Tree?

The falling snow cherry tree offers a unique combination of elegance and ease. Its slender, arching branches become festooned with masses of single white flowers, which appear in late winter to early spring before the new leaves emerge. This makes it one of the earliest sources of colour in the garden. Once the blooms fade, the tree produces fresh, bright-green foliage that forms a light, feathery canopy throughout summer.

Thanks to its naturally compact shape—typically reaching around 3–4 metres high—the falling snow cherry tree is ideal for smaller gardens, courtyards, or anywhere you want an impressive focal point without overtaking the space. It’s also low maintenance, tolerating a range of soil types and thriving in full sun to light shade.

Planting and Care Tips

For best results, plant your falling snow cherry tree in a position with good sun and well-drained soil. While tolerant of our variable New Zealand climate, it can benefit from a sheltered spot to protect the spring blossoms from strong winds. Add mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, and water well in dry spells, especially during establishment.

In autumn, the tree offers another highlight with yellow tones colouring its leaves before they fall, adding to its year-round interest.

Landscape Uses and Companion Trees

The cascading habit of the falling snow cherry tree makes it perfect as a specimen tree, drawing the eye as a single feature or creating drama when planted in groups. It also looks stunning beside ponds or paths, where its arching branches can be fully appreciated.

Keen to extend your cherry blossom season or mix different blossom colours? Consider pairing with other Prunus varieties like Prunus Amanogawa, a striking upright street tree, or the early-flowering Prunus Accolade. For bolder colour, Prunus Kanzan offers vivid pink double blooms, while Prunus Felix Jury and Prunus Awanui are New Zealand favourites adored for their prolific blossom.

Complementary Trees for Structure and Texture

To bring contrast and structure to your planting design, combine the soft lines of the falling snow cherry tree with evergreens and feature trees such as Cupressus macrocarpa Aurea, Laurus nobilis Miles Choice, Platanus Suttneri, Cornus capitata, and Corymbia maculata. Each brings its own unique appeal, helping you create a vibrant and dynamic garden all year round.

The falling snow cherry tree is a timeless addition to New Zealand gardens, celebrated for its low maintenance, beautiful display, and versatile landscaping potential. Discover this elegant favourite to transform your garden into a springtime spectacle year after year.
