Why Choose Evergreen Shade Trees?

Evergreen shade trees provide consistent colour and coverage throughout every season, ensuring your garden looks lively even in the depths of winter. Unlike deciduous trees that lose their leaves, evergreens remain full and green, giving instant impact and privacy exactly when you need it. These trees are excellent for creating outdoor rooms, providing habitat for native birds, and limiting unwanted views.

Top Evergreen Shade Tree Options

Laurelia novae-zelandiae

Laurelia novae-zelandiae, also known as Pukatea, is an elegant native evergreen perfect for wet and sheltered spots. This large tree boasts glossy foliage and a stately form, maturing into a much-loved shade provider. It’s ideal for larger gardens, riparian plantings, or as a statement specimen in a spacious lawn.

Hoheria populnea

For those after year-round foliage and stunning summer flowers, Hoheria populnea is a fantastic choice. Commonly known as Lacebark, this quick-growing native is perfect for shelterbelts or screening while attracting bees and birds with its profuse white blooms. It naturally grows dense enough for effective shade and wind protection.

Alectryon excelsus

Titoki, or Alectryon excelsus, is another versatile native evergreen shade tree. Its graceful, spreading canopy offers dappled shade, making it ideal for relaxing beneath on hot summer days. With glossy leaves and red fruit loved by native birds, Titoki is both ornamental and ecologically valuable.

Daphniphyllum macropodum

For a more exotic look, consider Daphniphyllum macropodum. This evergreen has lush, broad leaves and an impressive bushy form. It’s perfect for creating a subtropical feel or for use as background planting in mixed borders while still delivering robust shade and privacy.

Schinus molle (California Pepper Tree)

If you’re seeking an evergreen shade tree with feathery foliage and a touch of the Mediterranean, Schinus molle (California Pepper Tree) is a beautiful addition. This drought-tolerant species features graceful weeping branches, aromatic leaves, and pretty pink berries, offering ample shade with a relaxed, resort-style vibe.

Planting and Caring for Evergreen Shade Trees

Most evergreen shade trees are best planted in autumn or spring. Choose a location with enough space for mature growth and prepare the soil with compost. Regular watering during the first two summers helps ensure strong establishment. Mulch well and provide an annual feed to promote healthy foliage and swift growth.
