fuscospora-cliffortioides-4

Fuscospora cliffortioides (Mountain Beech)

Commonly known as Mountain Beech, this is a large, evergreen tree native to NZ. The foliage comprises small, dark green leaves which are held densely of short stems in fan-like sprays. Masses of tiny, red flowers are borne across the tree in spring. It grows with a broad and somewhat rounded habit to about 18 m tall and 6 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site that does not dry out. It is tolerant of frost and cool climates but does require wind protection while establishing. Mountain Beech makes for a lovely specimen in a larger garden or park, and is commonly added to native and revegetation plantings.

What is an Evergreen Beech Tree?

The term "evergreen beech tree" commonly refers to several New Zealand native species within the Fuscospora genus (formerly classified as Nothofagus), which retain their leaves throughout the year, unlike their deciduous European counterparts. Evergreen beeches are a vital component of native forests but thrive equally well in urban gardens and shelter belts. Their glossy green foliage, attractive canopy shape, and tolerance to varying soil types make them a favourite for gardeners and landscape designers alike.

Varieties of Evergreen Beech Trees

There are several notable species of evergreen beech trees that can be grown in New Zealand:

While these New Zealand natives are evergreen, European beech trees, such as Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck Green' and Fagus sylvatica Riversii, provide striking seasonal display but are generally deciduous. Gardeners seeking a truly evergreen beech should prioritise the native Fuscospora species.

Planting and Uses

Evergreen beech trees are prized for their versatility. They make excellent shelter belt trees, offering protection from wind and creating a tranquil microclimate for gardens, orchards, and stock. Their dense foliage is ideal for privacy screens and hedging, while their natural beauty lends itself to specimen planting or restoration projects.

To plant an evergreen beech tree, select a location with well-drained soil and plenty of sun or partial shade. Beeches generally require minimal ongoing care once established, though young trees will benefit from regular watering and protection from extreme weather.

Why Choose Evergreen Beech Trees for Your Garden?

Choosing an evergreen beech tree is an investment in your landscape’s beauty, resilience, and ecological value. These trees attract native birds, improve soil quality, and contribute to sustainable planting schemes. Whether you’re restoring a native forest, establishing a windbreak, or simply enhancing your garden’s aesthetic, evergreen beeches are an excellent, long-lived addition.

For those interested in exploring more about native and ornamental beeches, visit our pages for Fuscospora cliffortioides (Mountain Beech), Fuscospora fusca (Red Beech), Fuscospora solandri (Black Beech), Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck Green', and Fagus sylvatica Riversii.
