Why Choose Evergreen Azaleas in NZ Gardens?

Evergreen azaleas are celebrated for their dense, bushy habit and continuous leafy presence throughout the year. In spring and early summer, their showy flowers put on a breathtaking display in shades of pink, red, white, and even bicolour blends. Since they retain their foliage, these azaleas provide essential structure and cover when other plants are dormant. They love the mild climates typical of many parts of New Zealand, thriving best in dappled light and acidic, free-draining soils.

These stunning shrubs are perfect for adding both colour and privacy to your landscape. Their tidy growth is easily maintained with light pruning, and varieties range in size to suit garden beds, woodland plots, containers, or formal hedges.

Evergreen Azalea Care Tips

Caring for evergreen azaleas in NZ is straightforward with the right conditions. They prefer morning sun or dappled light and shelter from harsh afternoon rays, reducing the risk of leaf scorch. Plant in humus-rich, acidic soil (pH 5.5-6.0) and mulch well to retain moisture and reduce weeds. Avoid lime and feed with specialised azalea or rhododendron fertilisers in spring. Regular watering is crucial, especially in dry spells, but be sure your soil drains well to prevent root rot.

Prune lightly after flowering to encourage dense growth and maintain shape. With occasional deadheading and consistent care, your evergreen azaleas will reward you with lush leaves and spectacular blooms year after year.
