These reliable landscape plants add splashes of colour in spring and early summer, with some varieties offering repeat flowering or interesting evergreen leaves throughout the year. Popular Evergreen Azalea Varieties

Choosing the right evergreen azalea variety ensures your garden bursts into colour year after year. Many gardeners favour traditional selections such as Azalea indica, known for its robust habit and range of bloom shades, from white and pink through to bright magenta. This group is renowned for its ability to flourish in mild, humid climates and cope well with container planting as well as garden beds.

Classic cultivars like Azalea Amy (Amy Azalea) feature deep cerise-pink flowers and a dense, compact habit, perfect for small gardens and urban landscapes. For those who appreciate bi-colour or unique flower shapes, Azalea Seikai stands out with its captivating blue-violet blooms and ruffled petals that contrast beautifully against the dark evergreen leaves.

Gardeners who seek larger, statement shrubs will enjoy the robust growth and handsome white flowers produced by Azalea Dr Van Slyieken. Its lush foliage and generous flowering habits make it a favourite for borders and feature planting. Another standout is Azalea Gardenia Supreme, which is valued for its exceptionally fragrant, semi-double white blooms that light up shaded corners and add elegance when used as foundation plants.

Growing Conditions for Evergreen Azaleas

To ensure your evergreen azalea varieties thrive, plant them in well-drained, acidic soil and keep their root systems cool with a layer of mulch. They prefer light or dappled shade, which helps protect their flowers and foliage from scorching sun. Regular watering is important, but avoid waterlogged conditions, especially during the winter months. With minimal care, these striking shrubs reward you with a dazzling floral display and persistent green foliage through every season.

Designing With Evergreen Azalea Varieties

Evergreen azalea varieties suit a range of garden designs, from structured hedges through to relaxed, naturalistic plantings. Create a lush, layered look by combining multiple varieties, such as Azalea indica, Azalea Amy (Amy Azalea), and Azalea Seikai to experience a mix of colours and flower forms. Their compact size means they’re also excellent for pots or as underplanting beneath taller trees.

By carefully selecting and combining evergreen azalea varieties, you can ensure continuous seasonal interest and reliable evergreen structure for your New Zealand garden. Explore our range to find the perfect azaleas for your landscape and enjoy year-round beauty that never fades.
