Why Choose Evergreen Alder Hedge (Alnus jorullensis)?

Alnus jorullensis stands out among hedging choices for its vigorous form and adaptability. It holds its glossy leaves through winter in all but the coldest or driest conditions, giving you reliable coverage and greenery when other hedges might look tired. Reaching up to 10–15 metres if left untrimmed, it can be shaped and maintained as a handsome, clipped evergreen alder hedge from 2 metres upwards.

Perfect for rural blocks, shelterbelts, and urban backyards, the Mexican Alder is tolerant of a range of soils (even heavy clay), and will thrive in both wet and dry locations. Its deep root system is excellent for erosion control, while its capacity to fix nitrogen means it improves soil fertility wherever it's planted. Best of all, it’s relatively pest and disease free in New Zealand conditions.

Growing and Maintaining Alnus jorullensis Hedges

Establishing an evergreen alder hedge is straightforward. Space young trees about 1–1.5 metres apart for a dense, lush screen. Regular formative pruning keeps your hedge neat and dense, while mature plants can handle harder cuts if necessary. Mulching and regular watering help new plantings settle in, but once established, Alnus jorullensis is remarkably drought-tolerant.

Shelter is immediate, as growth can exceed 1 metre per year under good conditions. For the best year-round look, feed in spring and autumn with a balanced fertiliser and top up mulch yearly.

How Evergreen Alder Compares to Other Alders

While Alnus jorullensis is one of the few truly evergreen alders, gardeners might also consider related species for different sites or effects. For example, Alnus cordata (Italian Alder) is another fast-growing option, particularly suited to wet soils and as a shade provider. Alnus glutinosa 'Imperialis' impresses with its deeply cut leaves, giving a fine-textured effect.

For larger shelter and timber production, Alnus rubra is a North American favourite, while the classic Alnus glutinosa adapts well to New Zealand farmland. Decorative choices like Alnus incana 'Aurea' bring golden foliage interest in spring and autumn.
