Why Proper Escallonia Hedge Spacing Matters

Proper escallonia hedge spacing allows each shrub room to grow and fill out, creating a dense hedge with minimal gaps. Planting too close crowds their roots and reduces airflow, increasing the risk of disease. Too far apart and you’ll wait years for a hedge that gives you privacy. The ideal spacing balances healthy growth and rapid coverage, ensuring your hedge matures quickly and performs as expected.

Recommended Spacing for Escallonia Hedging

For most escallonia varieties, the recommended spacing is 60cm to 90cm between each plant in the row. This range works well whether you’re planting Escallonia 'Field Scarlet', Escallonia 'Snowbud', or any other escallonia cultivar. If you’re aiming for a very dense hedge, plant them closer (about 60cm apart). For a more informal look, or if space isn’t a concern, 90cm spacing allows shrubs to develop a broader shape.

If you want your escallonia hedge to fill out quickly, stagger your planting in two rows, spacing plants 90cm apart within the row and offsetting each plant. This technique ensures you’ll see a thick, layered effect much faster.

Factors Affecting Escallonia Hedge Spacing

Planting Tips for a Healthy Escallonia Hedge

Prepare the ground well before planting. Dig a trench, improve the soil with compost, and water your plants regularly, especially in the first year. Prune lightly after planting and yearly thereafter to encourage bushy growth, filling out every gap.

Escallonia hedges are robust and thrive in New Zealand conditions, but they do appreciate some shelter and well-drained soil. With the correct escallonia hedge spacing and thoughtful planting, your hedge will reward you with flowers, foliage, and structure for many years.
