encore azaleas

Looking to bring year-round colour to your New Zealand garden? Encore azaleas are the answer. Unlike traditional azaleas that bloom only in spring, Encore azaleas burst with vibrant flowers in spring, again in summer, and put on yet another show in autumn. This makes them a top choice for gardeners who crave a lively landscape across multiple seasons. With their rich hues, versatile growth habits, and resilience, Encore azaleas suit everything from statement hedging to small-space container displays.

Why Choose Encore Azaleas

Encore azaleas stand out due to their repeat-flowering abilities and excellent adaptability. Bred for enhanced heat tolerance and hardiness, these azaleas thrive in various New Zealand climates, from warm coastal zones to cooler inland gardens. Their evergreen foliage serves as a lush, green backdrop all year long, even when not in bloom. Gardeners love them for their low-maintenance promise—just a bit of pruning and occasional feeding delivers spectacular results.

Popular Varieties

If you’re searching for the perfect perennial performer, try highly-rated varieties of Encore azaleas. For striking bi-colour petals with a bold presence, consider Azalea Autumn Starburst (Autumn Starburst Encore Azalea) and Azalea Autumn Sunburst (Autumn Sunburst Azalea). Those who prefer softer, classic whites will love Azalea Autumn Ivory (Autumn Ivory Azalea). For rich purple tones, Azalea Autumn Royalty (Autumn Royalty Azalea) is a garden favourite, while Azalea Autumn Monarch (Autumn Monarch Azalea) features eye-catching peachy-orange shades.

Planting and Care Tips

Encore azaleas thrive best in a location with morning sun and afternoon shade, sheltered from harsh winds. For best results, plant in well-draining, acidic soil, and add a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Water newly planted azaleas regularly until established, then ease into a deep, less frequent schedule. Lightly prune after every major flush of flowers to keep your shrub compact and floriferous. An autumn feed with a slow-release, azalea-specific fertiliser ensures your plant enters the cooler months strong.

Design Ideas with Encore Azaleas

Encore azaleas are wonderfully versatile. Use them as evergreen borders along driveways or paths, mass plant for a vivid flowering hedge, or spotlight a specimen shrub in a feature planter near your entranceway or patio. Their manageable size and spectacular blooms make them ideal for gardens of all sizes—from spacious sections to compact city courtyards.
