Why Choose Emerald Green Thuja Arborvitae?

Thuja 'Smaragd' is celebrated for its consistent, dense growth and refined appearance. Unlike many fast-growing conifers, this variety maintains a slim, symmetrical profile without the need for constant pruning. It typically reaches 3-4 metres in height, making it ideal for screening, hedges, or formal plantings, even in small gardens. The elegant, feathery foliage remains a rich green throughout every season, standing up impressively to New Zealand’s climatic variations.

Planting and Care Tips

Growing emerald green thuja arborvitae is straightforward—an excellent choice for both new and experienced gardeners. Plant in full sun to partial shade for best colour and densest form. Well-drained, fertile soils are preferred, but this hardy shrub can adapt to a range of conditions. Once established, it’s quite drought-resistant and only requires occasional watering during prolonged dry spells. Light mulching helps conserve root moisture and suppresses weeds at its base.

Regular feeding in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser will keep your Thuja 'Smaragd' at its best. The neat, vertical habit means little to no pruning is required, though occasional shaping after new spring growth is easy if you desire a super-polished look.

Emerald Green Thuja Arborvitae for Hedges and Privacy Screens

The emerald green thuja arborvitae is a favourite for hedging in New Zealand, thanks to its natural density and uniform shape. Plant at spacings of 60-90cm for a seamless, evergreen barrier that enhances privacy without sacrificing style. Its non-invasive root system makes it suitable to plant near pathways, driveways, or property lines.

Complementary Conifers

Enhance your garden design by pairing Thuja 'Smaragd' with other elegant conifers. For a contrasting shape, Thuja occidentalis 'Pyramidalis' offers a taller, more pronounced column, while Thuja 'Green Giant' delivers fast growth and robust presence for large-scale screens. Bring a touch of golden tone with Thuja plicata Old Gold (Thuja Old Gold) or the vibrant hues of Thuja occidentalis 'Rheingold'. Diverse forms from the likes of Abies koreana Alpine Star and Cedrus atlantica Aurea can add even more visual interest.

Create Lasting Beauty with Emerald Green Thuja Arborvitae

Whether you’re designing a contemporary courtyard, enhancing a classic border, or seeking practical privacy solutions, the emerald green thuja arborvitae is a proven performer throughout New Zealand. Its year-round colour, low maintenance needs, and formal elegance make it a dependable favourite among gardeners and landscapers alike. Explore our wider selection of conifers, including Thuja plicata, Cupressocyparis leylandii 'Haggerston Grey', and Juniperus Plumosa Aurea (Golden Juniper) for creative combinations and lasting garden impact.
