What is a Double Hydrangea?

A double hydrangea is a type of hydrangea featuring flowers with multiple layers of petals, creating a ruffled, luxurious effect. Unlike classic single-petal varieties, double hydrangeas offer a denser, more intricate bloom. This trait can be found in both mophead and lacecap hydrangea forms, with some cultivars changing shades as the seasons evolve.

Stunning Double Hydrangea Varieties

New Zealand gardeners love the unique flare that double hydrangeas bring to garden beds and floral arrangements. Popular varieties include Hydrangea You Me Emotion, renowned for its blush-pink, multi-petalled heads, and Hydrangea Perfection, which offers layers of lilac to blue blooms as the summer unfolds. For a touch of romance, Hydrangea You Me Romance provides soft, pastel blossoms with sumptuous double petals, perfectly suited for creating cottage garden charm.

Another top choice is Hydrangea 'You Me Together'. This abundant bloomer rewards gardeners with lavish, ruffled flower clusters that look fabulous in both garden beds and containers. Want something a little different? Hydrangea quercifolia Snowflake is an oak-leaf form boasting double white flowers, which can provide a striking, textural contrast alongside classic hydrangea types.

How to Grow and Care for Double Hydrangeas

Double hydrangeas flourish in New Zealand’s temperate climate. For healthiest growth and the best blooms, plant in well-drained, humus-rich soil with morning sun and afternoon shade. These hydrangeas appreciate consistent moisture, particularly during dry spells. In spring, feed with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to boost flowering; a light mulch helps conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Pruning is best done after flowering, trimming only as needed to maintain shape. Double hydrangeas flower on old wood, so avoid heavy pruning that could sacrifice next year’s blooms.

Why Choose a Double Hydrangea?

Double hydrangeas are not just about next-level beauty. Their robust blooms make memorable cut flowers, and the shrubs are generally resilient once established. The showy blossoms attract pollinators and add richness to mixed borders, woodland gardens, or shady corners. If you’re seeking a hydrangea that offers something truly luxuriant, a double hydrangea delivers on impact and elegance, season after season.

Explore our collection of double hydrangeas—including favourites like Hydrangea You Me Emotion, Hydrangea Perfection, and Hydrangea quercifolia Snowflake—and bring a new dimension of beauty to your garden.
