Cherry Dawson

The 'Dawson' Cherry produces large, black coloured fruit in summer. The fruit has red flesh that is sweet with a lovely flavour. It requires another variety planted alongside (“a pollinator”) to produce good fruit yields, such as 'Early Rivers' or 'Stella'. This deciduous tree grows upright to about 5 m tall and 3 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. Cherries require a cold winter to set fruit, hence they are less suited to regions where winters tend to be mild. The 'Dawson' Cherry is commonly used for fruit production and makes an attractive tree in its own right.

Why Plant a Double Flowering Cherry Tree?

A double flowering cherry tree is prized for its exuberant, multi-petalled blossoms that often resemble fluffy pink or white pom-poms. These blossoms provide weeks of colour in mid to late spring, attracting pollinators and delighting visitors. In autumn, the foliage shifts to warm shades of gold and coppery red, offering extended visual appeal. The tree's moderate size and tidy branching also make it suitable for smaller Auckland gardens, rural properties, and urban courtyards alike. While double flowering varieties are mostly ornamental and seldom bear fruit, their striking beauty secures their place as a true garden treasure.

Double Flowering Cherry Tree Care Tips

Site your double flowering cherry tree in a sunny to lightly shaded position with well-drained soil. Amending your soil with organic compost before planting will help establish strong root growth. These cherries appreciate even moisture, especially while young, but can tolerate brief dry spells once mature. Light annual pruning after flowering keeps your tree healthy and maintains its balanced shape, while a layer of mulch around the root zone conserves water and controls weeds. With good air circulation and regular care, the double flowering cherry tree rewards you with reliable blooms and resilience across most areas of New Zealand.

Companion and Alternative Cherry Trees

If you are captivated by double flowering cherry trees, you may love discovering other popular cherry varieties that thrive in local conditions. The spectacular Prunus Accolade is known for its blush-pink semi-double blossoms and graceful form. For those interested in fruiting cherries, the sweet and classic Cherry Rainier is a household favourite, offering delicious yellow fruit with a red blush. Traditionalists and home orchardists might also enjoy Cherry Dawson, a robust variety with deep red cherries, or the productive Cherry Modesto. For something unique, Cherry Griotella Frumi offers smaller fruit, often favoured for jams and desserts.
