Features of the Double Delight Rose Bush

The double delight rose bush stands out for its eye-catching, high-centred blooms that measure up to 10cm across. The colour contrast intensifies with increased sunlight, so those planted in sunny spots display the most vivid red edges. This rose’s classic spicy-sweet fragrance is extremely potent, making it an ideal choice for sensory gardens or patio plantings where you can enjoy its perfume up close. A typical double delight rose bush grows to around 1–1.2 metres tall, forming a lush, bushy structure that fits beautifully into mixed borders or dedicated rose beds.

How to Plant and Care for Your Double Delight Rose Bush

To help your double delight rose bush thrive, choose a sunny, well-drained spot with at least six hours of sunlight daily. Prepare the soil by enriching it with compost or well-rotted manure before planting, and allow plenty of space for healthy air circulation. Regular watering, especially during dry spells, and a top-up of mulch will keep roots cool and retain moisture. In early spring and again in mid-summer, feed with a quality rose fertiliser. Prune once a year in late winter to shape your bush and encourage strong new growth.

Rose Companions and Other Garden Favourites

The double delight rose bush pairs beautifully with other robust and colourful plants. Try joining it with Rose Cecil Brunner for an old-world charm or with Rose Diamonds Forever for even more rose variety in your borders. For added texture and year-round interest, plant with evergreen shrubs like Pieris Pink Delight (Lily Of The Valley Shrub Pieris japonica), whose glossy foliage and flowers create an appealing contrast. Perennials such as Hemerocallis Rose Cherub (Rose Daylily) are also excellent companions, offering blooms at different times and attracting pollinators.

Why the Double Delight Rose Bush Belongs in Your Garden

Adding a double delight rose bush to your garden means enjoying continuous, fragrant blooms and vibrant colour from late spring through autumn. Its hardy nature makes it suitable for most New Zealand climates, and as an iconic hybrid tea, it rewards minimal care with maximum impact.
