What is Senecio peregrinus (String of Dolphins)?

Senecio peregrinus is a trailing succulent that belongs to the diverse Senecio family. Its distinctive foliage curls and arches, creating the delightful illusion of pods of dolphins jumping along the stems. When grown in a hanging pot or cascading over shelves, the String of Dolphins quickly becomes a living conversation piece with its quirky appearance and gentle growth habit.

This plant prefers well-draining soil and occasional watering, similar to its Senecio relatives. If you love unusual succulents, you might also enjoy exploring Senecio rowleyanus variegata and Senecio jacobsenii, each offering their own distinct foliage and growth styles.

Growing Tips for Dolphin Plant

The dolphin plant flourishes in an environment with abundant bright, indirect sunlight. Over-watering is a common issue, so it's best to let the soil dry out between watering sessions. If you're creating a succulent collection, consider pairing the String of Dolphins with Senecio Angel Wings or Senecio serpens for eye-catching contrasts in colour and texture.

Propagation of Senecio peregrinus is simple—stem cuttings root readily, helping you expand your dolphin pod or share with friends. As a fast-growing plant, regular pruning can encourage fuller trails.

The Perfect Houseplant for NZ Homes

With its whimsical look and low maintenance needs, the dolphin plant suits both modern apartments and cosy family homes across New Zealand. Ideal for hanging baskets, shelf displays, or trailing along window sills, it instantly adds quirky charm to your interiors. If you love trailing plants, you might also consider Senecio rowleyanus (String Of Pearls) or Peperomia prostrata (String of Turtles) for variety and visual interest.
