Popular Dichondra Varieties for New Zealand Gardens

Dichondra comes in a range of varieties, each with its own distinct foliage colour and growth habit. The top choices for New Zealand gardens include:

Dichondra Emerald Falls

Known for its dense, emerald-green foliage, Dichondra Emerald Falls is a versatile variety ideally suited to both garden beds and hanging baskets. Its trailing stems cascade beautifully, making it a stellar choice for vertical gardens or as a graceful groundcover in shaded spots. Emerald Falls is hardy, resilient, and easy to establish—perfect for both beginner and experienced gardeners.

Dichondra Silver Falls

If you’re searching for striking silver foliage, Dichondra Silver Falls stands out among dichondra varieties. Its trailing silvery leaves create a modern, shimmering effect and pair beautifully with colourful flowers and contrasting evergreens. Silver Falls is heat tolerant and drought resistant, responding well to the varied climates found across New Zealand. Plant it in pots, garden edges, or wall planters for maximum impact.

Dichondra repens

A classic choice for lawns and shady areas, Dichondra repens is prized for its soft, inviting texture. Native to New Zealand and Australia, this variety flourishes in damp, partially shaded conditions and can even tolerate light foot traffic. Dichondra repens is frequently used as a lawn substitute or between pavers, providing a lush, maintenance-friendly green carpet that thrives where traditional turf struggles.

Caring for Your Dichondra Varieties

Most dichondra varieties flourish in well-drained soil with regular watering, but require minimal fertiliser once established. For gardens prone to weeds, consider using a herbicide such as Victory Gold - 1 Litre to keep your dichondra beds pristine without harming the plants. Regular trimming or mowing will encourage a dense mat of foliage and maintain your preferred shape.

Great Companion Plants and Creative Combinations

Dichondra is a fantastic companion for flowering shrubs and ornamental trees. Contrast your low-growing green or silver groundcover with the elegant, double white blooms of Prunus Shimidsu Sakura for an eye-catching display in spring. Exploring combinations with dichondra varieties allows you to add texture, colour, and year-round interest to your landscape.
