Why Choose Dichondra for Your NZ Garden?

Dichondra is well-suited to New Zealand's diverse climates. Its trailing leaves create a dense, carpet-like effect, perfect for those who want to reduce lawn mowing or simply enjoy beautiful ground cover. As an evergreen perennial, dichondra stays lush throughout the year and tolerates light foot traffic, making it ideal for informal paths and lawn alternatives. Whether you prefer cascading effects for containers or want a drought-tolerant solution, dichondra offers maximum impact with minimal effort.

Popular Dichondra Varieties in NZ

Gardeners across New Zealand can choose from several standout dichondra varieties. If you’re after a silver-toned, cascading effect, Dichondra Silver Falls is a popular option, prized for its shimmering, delicate foliage. For ground cover that remains lush green, Dichondra repens is the go-to classic, often used as a lawn replacement or to fill gaps between pavers. And for those who appreciate a deeper, richer green with trailing impact, Dichondra Emerald Falls brings versatility and year-round interest to mixed plantings.

Where and How to Plant Dichondra in NZ

Dichondra thrives in well-drained soils and adapts to partial shade or full sunlight, making it suitable for gardens from Auckland to Dunedin. For best coverage, space plants approximately 15 cm apart and keep young plants moist until they’re well-established. Regular irrigation in the first season, followed by occasional deep watering, will keep your dichondra thriving without fuss.

For those wanting to maintain a weed-free garden with lush dichondra groundcover, consider pairing your planting with effective weed management. Products like Victory Gold - 1 Litre offer selective control of common broadleaf weeds, allowing your dichondra to form a dense, healthy mat.

Companion Plants for Dichondra

Dichondra pairs beautifully with a wide range of perennials and ornamental plants. For striking texture and seasonal colour, combine dichondra with elegant hellebores like the Helleborus English Thoroughbred Series (Winter Rose), which thrive in similar light and soil conditions. Mix and match dichondra with your favourite trailing or upright perennials to create dynamic garden beds, border edges, or dramatic container arrangements.
