Why Choose Dianella Somersby?

Dianella Somersby stands out for its elegant upright habit, reaching approximately 60cm tall and forming dense, grass-like clumps. The foliage is highlighted by bright green leaves with subtle blue tones, giving gardens a lush and modern look year-round. In spring and summer, delicate blue-purple flowers rise above the foliage, followed by attractive blue berries that add further interest. This New Zealand favourite is evergreen, wind tolerant, and copes well with coastal conditions, making it perfect for a range of outdoor settings.

Best Uses for Dianella Somersby in the Garden

Dianella Somersby is exceptionally versatile. It creates striking mass plantings, looks superb as a garden border, and thrives in rockeries or raised beds. Its compact growth makes it ideal for contemporary urban landscapes, where it provides colour and texture without becoming invasive. Use Dianella Somersby to control erosion on slopes, define driveways, or soften the edges of paths. It also works brilliantly in low-maintenance public spaces or commercial landscapes requiring robust, reliable greenery.

Planting and Care Tips

One of the biggest strengths of Dianella Somersby is its low-maintenance nature. It performs well in full sun to partial shade and tolerates most soil types, provided drainage is good. Once established, Dianella Somersby is drought tolerant and requires little additional care beyond the occasional tidy up of old leaves. For best performance, water regularly during the first growing season and mulch to help retain soil moisture. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote vibrant foliage.

Complement Your Garden with Other Dianella Varieties

While Dianella Somersby is a standout on its own, it also pairs beautifully with other Dianella species for layered planting effects. Consider mixing it with Dianella tasmanica variegata for a splash of variegated foliage or using Dianella Blue Twist to introduce striking blue tones and twisting leaves. For compact borders, try Dianella Little Devil, or add a dash of colour with the vivid tones of Dianella Cherry Red. Those interested in NZ natives will also appreciate the adaptability of Dianella intermedia in a range of planting schemes.
