dianella revoluta variegata

If you're searching for vibrant, low-maintenance foliage that adds year-round colour and texture to your garden, dianella revoluta variegata (more commonly referred to as Dianella tasmanica variegata) is an exceptional choice. This striking evergreen is prized for its bold sword-shaped leaves adorned with creamy white margins, making it an excellent accent plant for New Zealand landscapes. Adaptable, hardy, and easy to grow, this Dianella brings brightness and structural appeal to both modern and traditional gardens.

Dianella tasmanica variegata

Dianella tasmanica variegata produces upright, strap-like leaves which are variegated with stripes of dark green and cream. Short flower stems rise above the foliage through spring to bear small, blue flowers which result in blue berries. It grows to 50 cm tall and the same wide in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. Dianella tasmanica variegata is commonly mass planted either as a groundcover or on a bank, included in borders or mixed plantings, planted around the base of large trees, grown around water features such as streams and ponds, or included in cottage gardens.

Features and Benefits

Dianella revoluta variegata stands out due to its distinct variegated foliage. The broad, arching leaves range from deep green to blue-green, banded with creamy white edges that illuminate shaded corners. With its clumping growth habit, this variety typically reaches 60–80 cm in height and width, forming elegant tufts that look great planted en masse or among companion plants.

Aside from visual appeal, this Dianella is remarkably tough. It tolerates dry spells, occasional frosts, and thrives in various garden soils—from sandy and free-draining to heavier loams. Its resilience makes it an ideal choice for urban landscapes, coastal gardens, borders, and even containers.

Ideal Uses in the Garden

Dianella revoluta variegata is ideal for:

This versatile plant pairs beautifully with other robust, strappy-leaved species like Phormium 'Platts Black' and Phormium 'Yellow Wave', or as a fresh foil to the burgundy tones of Cordyline Burgundy Roma.

Care and Maintenance

One of the reasons dianella revoluta variegata is so popular in New Zealand gardens is its low-maintenance nature. It prefers full sun to part shade but will tolerate deeper shade, though variegation is most pronounced with good light. Water regularly during establishment, then only as needed—this plant is drought tolerant once mature. A light feed with organic fertiliser in early spring keeps it looking lush, and you can tidy up tired foliage by removing old leaves at the base.
