Why Choose a Daphne Shrub?

Gardeners favour the daphne shrub for its unique blend of ornamental charm and practical garden uses. Most varieties produce clusters of tubular flowers in shades of white, pink, purple, or red, often nestled amid glossy evergreen foliage. The famed perfume of daphne blooms is a highlight in mid- to late-winter, when few other plants are flowering. Compact and slow-growing, daphne shrubs are perfect for containers, small gardens, or as structural accents in mixed borders.

Popular Types of Daphne Shrub

There is an appealing range of daphne shrub varieties to consider, each bringing something special to your garden design:

How to Grow Daphne Shrubs in New Zealand

Daphne shrubs thrive in sheltered positions with well-drained soil and partial shade. They dislike wet feet and hot afternoon sun, making them well suited to gardens with light, dappled shade. When planting your daphne shrub, ensure the rootball sits slightly above ground level to avoid waterlogged roots. Mulch yearly to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but avoid piling mulch around the stem. Daphnes benefit from gentle feeding in early spring but do not respond well to heavy fertilisers.

Tips for Healthy, Long-Lived Daphne Shrubs

Enhance Your Garden with Daphne Shrubs

A daphne shrub is a rewarding investment for its winter and spring colour, lush foliage, and legendary fragrance. Whether mass-planted or used as a single specimen near living areas, daphne shrubs bring year-round satisfaction and a touch of luxury to New Zealand gardens. Explore our nursery’s selection of daphnes, including Daphne arbuscula (Rose Daphne), Daphne odora Rubra (Red Winter Daphne), and more, to find the perfect plant for your space.
